Why HOPE exists

Obesity treatment has never had more to offer: new medications, updated guidelines, and a clearer understanding of obesity as a chronic, biologically driven disease.

And yet these treatments aren't reaching the patients who need them. The reason isn't that physicians don't know the science, or that patients aren't motivated. It's that the consultation between them has broken down, loaded with stigma, internalized bias, and the residue of decades of commercial misinformation.

No other condition in medicine arrives at the visit so heavily compromised before a single word is spoken. Effective obesity treatment cannot reach patients until that conversation is repaired.

The barrier to advancing obesity care isn't knowledge. It's the consultation itself.

That is the problem HOPE was built to solve.

What makes HOPE different

Physician-led, by the people who built the field HOPE is governed by practicing clinicians and academic obesity specialists who have authored the guidelines, the staging tools, and the methods Canadian and international obesity medicine runs on.
Patient voice at the governance level A patient living with obesity sits on the HOPE board with a director-level vote. That vote is a real check on whether the program does what it claims, not advisory input that leadership can set aside.
Multilingual and multi-jurisdictional by design Programs are built for the language, culture, and accreditation framework of the markets where they're delivered.
Measured against practice change, not attendance HOPE programs report against indicators like treatment initiation, shared-decision uptake, and knowledge retention at 60 days, rather than seats filled.

The Conversation

HOPE's first project is a 12-month longitudinal CPD initiative built around the consultation gap, delivered through the channels physicians already use, in formats they can fit into a clinic day. It is the prototypical HOPE project: independent, patient-anchored, and designed to change practice rather than transmit slides.
